Known commonly as Hammered or Furrowed Shield Lichen in English and Parmélie à sillons in French, Swales encountered this foliose lichen on rocks on 'Western slope to sea' while travelling across the Northwest Territories in summer 1964.

Parmelia lichens are commonly found across boreal regions growing on decidous trees and rocks. The Hammered Shield lichen Swales encountered would have appeared gray-blue with a tinge of green on its square-shaped tips.
